Lockdown Licks no.176. “Magnolia” by JJ Cale.
Played on an HB35+ set to mid pick up position using both humbuckers. Played through a NUX M8 on clean setting with a little reverb.
1st video- Intro to first verse including signature riff, F & C major 7 chords and a few lines sung!
2nd video- my take on the lead guitar solo.
‘Magnolia’ is track 5 on the JJ Cale album ‘Naturally’ which was the debut studio album by
him, released on October 25, 1971.
His laid back style was often delivered with almost whispered vocal and minimal effects on the instrumentation. He was a big influence on the styles of artists including Eric Clapton who covered “After Midnight”, Mark Knopfler and Lynyrd Skynyrd who famously covered his song “Call Me The Breeze” done with all ‘bells, whistles and guitars blazing’ opposite to JJs own version.
