Lockdown Licks no. 217.
“Reelin In The Years” by Steely Dan. Intro licks played on a Stratocaster set to mid/bridge pickup into a NUX M8 amp set to ‘superlead’ with no effects. This iconic first riff is in a “call and response” jazz blues style with a 3 note ‘pull off’/ hammer on’ riff on the B string, played descending then ascending, it ends with a micro bend on G and a ‘string skip’ to the bass note on A string to end. It was played by the superb Elliott Randall on the original.
Reelin’ In the Years” is a song by jazz rock band Steely Dan, released as the second single from their 1972 album, Can’t Buy a Thrill. It reached No. 11 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Steely Dans ‘search for unique eclectic perfection’ certainly payed off in their choice of guitar players and time spent recording, often asking guitarists to record 20 or more ‘takes’ to get the ‘perfect’ riff or solo on record!
