Played on a Telecaster tuned to E5 tuning (EBE EBE) into a NUX M8 amp set to ‘superlead’, gain backed off to 2,with slight reverb.

Joe Perry plays a 5 string picked melodic line on into some rock n roll descending chords by using index finger only, reaching the open E chord with zero left hand.I ended with a harmonic chord at 12th fret and let it ring.

Written by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, this song came at a time when Tyler was struggling to come up with effective lyrics for the tracks for Toys In The Attic album and n 1975. The band told him to write about what he knew, so he came up with words about life on road – the hotels, groupies, and boredom. Tyler calls the song “my diary.”

The opening lyrics, “Blood stains the ivories of my daddy’s baby grand,” relate to the piano a young Stephen Tyler would park himself under while his dad – a classically trained musician – would play.

The E5 tuning is great! Just remember to tune your G string DOWN to E not up, or you’re heading for a broken G.
