Lockdown Licks no.34
“Up in Smoke” by Blackberry Smoke. Signature riff played on Gibson Junior with amp on ‘metal’ setting with gain backed off to 8. No effects! Original played by Charlie Starr and Paul Jackson, sometimes in a ‘dual harmony’ style uncannily like the famous “Thin Lizzy” dual guitar sound.
“Up in Smoke” is from the album Little Piece of Dixie 2009.
A live stomper, “Up In Smoke” is about all the hellraising and celebrating that happens when Blackberry Smoke comes into town for a show! In an interview with Blackberry Smoke frontman Charlie Starr, he said of this track: “It’s not necessarily a deep statement. It’s really just a road song, a fun song. It’s not altogether complicated – you have to have songs like that. You have love songs and sad songs and murder songs, and then you have fun songs, and that’s one.”
